About

What is Myofunctional Therapy?

I like to describe Myofunctional Therapy as physiotherapy for your mouth and face. It is an exercised based therapy that helps to facilitate proper growth and development of the face and airway in kids and correct/improve orofacial Myofunctional disorders in adults.

Goals of therapy:

  • Nasal Breathing

  • Lip Seal

  • Proper Tongue Posture

  • Proper Chewing and Swallowing

Who can benefit from Myofunctional Therapy.

Myofunctional therapy can benefit a wide range of individuals, particularly those experiencing issues related to improper oral and facial function.

1. Children with orofacial development issues- myofunctional therapy can help correct tongue thrust, mouth breathing, and improper swallowing which contribute to dental and speech development problems. My passion is with children and correcting their orofacial myofunctional disorders at a young age to establish healthy growth of the face and airways.

2. Mouth Breathers- Myofunctional therapy can help retrain nasal breathing- which improves oxygenation and overall health. Mouth breathing leads to an increased risk of cavities and gum disease.

3. Orthodontic Issues- Myofunctional therapy can support orthodontic treatment by ensuring proper tongue and muscle function to maintain long-term alignment.

4. TMJ Disorders and Jaw Pain-  Strengthening and retraining oral muscles can alleviate tension and pain in the jaw.

5. Tongue ties- Myofunctional Therapy can help you determine if you need to see a provider for a release assessment, prepare you for a release and then help you retrain your tongue and learn how to optimize the new movement you have.

6. Speech and Swallowing Disorders- Proper tongue Posture and movement can aid in clearer speech and more efficient swallowing.
